Berkeley Cohousing
Berkeley, California
Added six new units and rehabilitated eight
others, plus a common house, to create a
14-unit urban community.
Designed for sustainability using
permaculture landscape principles, passive
and active solar heating, grey water re-use,
sustainable growth timber, and low-toxicity and
recycled materials.
Our challenge was to continue the
organic yet coherent growth patterns
and architectural style established over
time on the site. The design is a delicate
juxtaposition of craftsman style, clapboard
style, and Spanish stucco style, creating a
microcosm of the best of Berkeley's finer
neighborhoods.
