Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno
Fresno, California
The environmentally responsible 23,000 sf master plan includes a sanctuary with 350 seats (Phase 1 built 2008), a social hall, adult and children’s libraries, classrooms, and outdoor courtyards and play areas (Phase 2). An existing home on the property was retained for church offices.
The entry courtyard creates a welcoming gathering space while a series of landscape and building elements provide a calming transition into the internally focused sanctuary.
Hidden light wells and high windows create ever-changing light against the walls of the sanctuary.
Deep overhangs and porches shade summer sun while high windows provide daylight and natural ventilation.
Outdoor areas are designed to accommodate many social functions including an outdoor classroom within an existing citrus orchard.
The first phase of the project was completed in 2008, and will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, a first in Fresno County.
