Windsong Cohousing
British Columbia, Canada
34-unit cohousing community. Provided
participatory programming, schematic
design, and design consultation services.
Community is on a 5-acre site with a
stream running through it. A government determination
was made that building would be allowed
on only one quarter of the site. The design
turns this into an advantage of the project,
using the density and a glass-covered
street to strengthen the community.
This was the first cohousing community
with a glass-covered street in North
America. The street creates a light,
comfortable common circulation space
that greatly enhances the feeling of the
buildings and that became a strong selling
point for the community in this wet northern climate
Project completed: 1996
