FAIR OAKS ECOHOUSING, SACRAMENTO, CA This 30-unit cohousing community is focused on reducing its environmental footprint, which is especially significant given its location in the overwhelming vastness of Sacramento’s urban sprawl. Much of what residents need is provided on site in the 3,800 sf common facilities. Downtown Fair Oaks as well as an extensive park and bike path system are within a mile. MDA is providing full architectural services. Under construction.

FROGSONG COHOUSING, COTATI, CA A mixed-use project located at the edge of a small downtown. This 30-unit community shares a common house, garden and workshop and includes 7,500 sf of commercial storefronts. Provided full architectural and project management and development services. Construction completed October 2003.

HAYSTACK HEIGHTS, SPOKANE, WA A 34-unit intergenerational cohousing community located in Spokane, WA. The community consists of townhouses and flats located close to downtown to maximize efficiency, interaction, and green space. Currently in working drawing phase.

LA QUERENCIA COHOUSING, FRESNO, CA La Querencia is a 28-home cohousing community on 2.8 acres with a 4023 s.f. common house, pool, exercise room, teen hangout, workshop, and gardens. It is designed with active/passive cooling/heating techniques to dramatically reduce monthly utility bills. Super insulation, radiant barriers, and highly energy efficient windows keep homes cool in summer and warm in winter. Energy Star appliances, low-water-use fixtures, ample natural light and it was constructed with low-toxicity building materials. Project completion Summer 2008.

MOUNTAIN VIEW COHOUSING, MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA A 19-unit cohousing project for active adults, on a 0.9-acre site near downtown amenities and public transportation. This is American cohousing at a European density. Parking is underground providing generous open space adjacent to the 5,500 sf of common facilities. This includes a farmhouse, built in 1898, repurposed as a caretaker unit, a shared library, and guest rooms. MDA provided design, consultation, construction documentation, and construction administration services (50% CDs, 50% CA). Completed 2015.

NEVADA CITY COHOUSING, NEVADA CITY, CA A 34-unit community on 11 acres within walking distance of the small town “Main Street” of Nevada City in the Sierra Foothills. Site plan also includes seven single-family lots with seven carriage units for a total of 48 units. Providing full architectural, project management and development services. Construction completed 2006.

OAKCREEK COMMUNITY, STILLWATER, OK A senior cohousing community of 24 private homes on a 7.5 acre site near downtown Stillwater, the Boomer Creek trail system, and Oklahoma State University. Neighborhood design featuring clustered houses preserves open space and existing trees on the site. The original single family house on the site was remodeled and doubled in size with an addition to form the and 3,700 sf common house . MDA provided full architectural services. Completed 2012.

QUIMPER VILLAGE SENIOR COHOUSING, PORT TOWNSEND, WA A senior cohousing community with 28 dwelling units and 5,700 sf of common facilities. Houses range from 900 to 1350 sf. MDA provided schematic design, consulting services, and construction documentation services thereafter (50% CDs, 50% CA). Completed fall of 2017.

SILVER SAGE VILLAGE, BOULDER, CO One of the first senior cohousing communities to be built in the United States. Part of the new Holiday Neighborhood in North Boulder, this 16-unit community is situated around a garden court and features a 5,000 sf common house, a workshop, a common deck and community gardens. Providing design services and some construction documents. Construction completed 2007.

VANCOUVER COHOUSING, VANCOUVER, BC A 31-unit urban infill cohousing community. The 6,500 sf euro-scale common facilities are designed to be family-supportive and senior-friendly. Even in a dense environment, underground parking, a ground-level courtyard, roof gardens and balconies provide generous open space. MDA provided full design services. Completed in 2015.

VILLAGE HEARTH COHOUSING, DURHAM, NC A 28-unit LGBT-focused senior cohousing community. Their members are gay and straight, single and coupled, working and retired, and they share a common vision: to live in an active, caring community where they can be themselves and age successfully, together. In construction phase.

WOLF CREEK LODGE, GRASS VALLEY, CA A 30-unit community of active adults, aged 50 and older, who enjoy a lodge-like building near shopping, nature, and Grass Valley’s historic downtown. The building was designed with a focus on passive heating and cooling as well as community. Won Geela award for sustainability presented by Governor Brown. Completed 2012.
